At least one year post-qualification experience is preferred. We prefer long-term working relationships so if you are looking to start life afresh in a school and city full of opportunities you could be a perfect fit for this position.
The main teaching duties of the English teacher are teaching Business English in company, teaching General English and Cambridge exam preparation courses at the school premises. Other duties include, but are not limited to invigilating exams, placement testing, thorough lesson planning, and staff development.
Your timetable will be 25 hours per week. At the beginning teachers are usually short on hours but that’s made up for by invigilating exams such as IELTS, or any of the other Cambridge English Language Assessment exams, placement testing, exam and materials creation, and other academic duties as assigned by the Director of Studies or Director.
Teachers are expected to work both in-company and in-school. In-company courses are usually Business English oriented. In-school courses are General English oriented. There are many private IELTS preparation courses and other ESP private courses we offer on demand. Soon we will start offering YL courses as well so being able to work with children is an asset. Basic computing skills are required.
From time to time, teachers may be required to substitute other teachers. This is not often the case, but it does happen.
It is important to bear in mind that teachers will be traveling to companies via public transportation and this can involve transfers and can take up to 2 hours, though this is in extreme cases. The weather is also an important factor to be aware of as it is often quite hot in Monterrey.
All teachers are expected to have a professional development path and to be active in its pursuit and in ELT in general. Teachers are expected to be trained as Cambridge English Language Assessment Speaking Examiners at no cost to the teacher and apply these exams for which they will be paid above their monthly salary. IH Monterrey often runs in-house courses and certificates such as the IH CAM, BET, and Language Awareness Course, as well as a host of specific workshops, and teachers are expected to participate in these courses. Teachers are also expected to participate in monthly Teacher Development Sessions (TDS), which are often run by teachers themselves, with the guidance of the Director of Studies, and cover a wide variety of ELT topics. IH Monterrey may also subsidise other teacher training courses on a needs basis. All teachers will have access to an in-house supplemental materials library that is constantly being added to, as well as the IHWO Teacher's Resources.
Accommodation is not paid for. However, we put teachers up in a hotel in downtown Monterrey for no more than 5 days until they find a place to live. If the teacher has not found accommodation before the 5 days, it will be their responsability to find further accommodation or to pay for the hotel for nights exceeding 5. lH Monterrey guides and helps teachers throughout the process of finding accommodation, taking them to places, talking to landords, making suggestions, showing them the bus routes that pass by near their new place, etc. We don’t provide a settling in allowance. Teachers are advised to bring with them enough funds to cover 3 months' rent in advance to cover a two month deposit plus one month rent.
