Who we’re looking for:
This is a general English and YL post for enthusiastic and committed teachers looking to hone existing skills as well as develop new ones. The right candidate will be hard-working, very keen to develop, creative and interested in all ages and aspects of teaching. A CELTA or equivalent is essential, but we are happy to interview interested candidates with little to no teaching experience as well as those with a more experienced background. A knowledge of Spanish is desirable but not a necessity.
About IH Valladolid:
We are a busy school of 14 teachers with two main IH sites, one in the centre next to the university and one in a bustling nearby suburb. Some teaching also takes place off-site, with daily classes at a primary/secondary school a short drive away as well as at a number of businesses around Valladolid.
We are an official examination centre for both Trinity and IELTS and also prepare students for Cambridge Main Suite exams. Our students are a mix of young learners (3 years old and up) and adults attending a range of general, business English, and exam preparation courses.
All students follow a tailored syllabus, with adult General English classes using coursebooks such as New English File and Cutting Edge. The YL and teen classes do not follow set coursebooks. Instead there is a detailed syllabus with suggested materials for each learning objective, drawing from our large library and on-line resource bank of coursebooks and teaching materials. Teachers are strongly encouraged to co-plan to reduce planning time and guidance is also available from the 3 Senior Teachers and 2 Directors of Studies.
About the job:
Teachers are scheduled up to 24 contact hours a week at a salary of 1200 EUR/month net (after tax). Teaching mainly takes place Monday - Thursday, with no more than 3 hours on a Friday. Friday mornings are reserved for planning, teacher development sessions and staff/parent meetings.
All staff are based out of one of our two centres and all teach some off-site classes. While most classes take place in the afternoon/evening and every effort is made to schedule block hours, teachers should expect some split shifts throughout the week.
Small breaks are provided between classes and travel time is taken into account for off-site classes. Buses are frequent and a school car is provided where necessary. All teachers have ‘repeat levels’ and the 24 hours of teaching normally covers 6 or 7 different levels.
IH Valladolid is very committed to staff development and in-house development workshops occur as frequently as required/possible/requested, as do regular observations. Additionally, over the 2017-2018 academic year we will be running the IHCYLT face-to-face course. In principle any teachers without a YL certificate will be expected to complete it, with fees paid for by the school. A training budget exists for teachers wishing to take other IH or outside courses or attend conferences.
As previously stated, the salary is 1200 EUR net/month. This is above the average salary in the region and easily covers living costs – shared accommodation is normally less than 250 EUR/month, utilities rarely more than 100 EUR, and a coffee costs less than 1.30 EUR. Most teachers find they have plenty of disposable income to enjoy the night life, tapas bars, and to travel to nearby Madrid and other cities around Spain.
Contracts run from the 25th of September, when classes start, until the end of May or June (dtc). All teachers are expected to attend a two-day induction on September 21st and 22nd. This is unpaid but the two days are returned in lieu as paid Fridays throughout the year, allowing the numerous holiday weekends to be extended. All holidays, such as 2 weeks at Christmas and 10 days over Easter, are paid.
Help finding accommodation is provided by a Spanish speaking member of the management or admin team and a subsidised homestay can be arranged for the first week (at a cost of 95 EUR max to be deducted from second month’s salary). If a teacher arranges their own accommodation for the first week, IH Valladolid will contribute 100 EUR towards the costs.
10 hours of free ‘Survival’ Spanish classes are provided for those with no Spanish. Discounted Spanish classes can be provided upon request for non-beginners.
